USA and Italy will strengthen collaboration on IA, energy and scientific research

On 1 and 2 April the United States hosted the Italian Republic in Washington, DC, at the 15th meeting of the United States-Italy Joint Commission (JCM) on scientific and technological cooperation. Brendan Hanrahan, senior official of the State Department for European and Eurasian Affairs, presided over the meeting together with Maria Tripodi, Italian State Secretary for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

Delegations took the opportunity of this JCM to deepen cooperation in quantum sciences, high-performance computing and artificial intelligence, fission and fusion energy, biotechnology and advanced materials. The two parties decided to promote joint research, exchanges of researchers, shared infrastructure and public-private partnerships. They also stressed the common interest in strengthening research safety in critical technologies and helping partners to adopt similar practices to protect innovation.

To pursue these goals, Italy has announced significant funding for joint strategic research projects in 2027-2028 in identified priority areas, opening the way to US research agencies to compete for high-value collaborations with their Italian counterparts. Both countries reiterated their commitment to a close scientific and technological partnership that drives US and Italian innovation, support mutual employment and economic growth.
