The 47th annual United Van Lines study reveals the dynamics of population movements in the United States. The data, based on migratory models between the company’s customers states, indicate that the general trend sees Americans move east and south, preferring less expensive areas but with services comparable to those of the big cities.
A surprise is New York, which emerges as the fourth state city by number of movements in 2023, with 60% of the residents who decided to leave the city. The main reasons for this phenomenon include retirement, health, family, lifestyle, work and only at least the high costs.
In contrast, Vermont continues to be the most popular destination for inbound transfers, with 65% of travel. The research shows that the main motivation to move to Vermont was to be closer to the family, followed by a change in lifestyle.
The general trend shows that several states of the south-east, such as South Carolina, North Carolina and Alabama, are growing in popularity with a high percentage of inbound travel. At the same time, in the Midwest and West region, states like Illinois, Michigan and California continue to record a high percentage of outbound travel.
Eily Cummings, vice-president of United Van Lines’ corporate communications, stresses that “Americans are moving towards more accessible and low-density areas across the country.” Delocalization is driven by several factors, including housing costs, regional climates, urban planning and employment growth.
