A site and a publication to collect the names, faces and stories of 411 victims of Italian and Italian-American origin of the attacks of 11 September 2001. The project, independent and non-profit, will be presented on the occasion of the commemorations for the 25th anniversary of the attack on the General Consulate of Italy in New York.
The initiative was born from the work of Giulio Picolli, who for months reconstructed one by one the names starting from the official registers, looking for photographs, verifying information and crossing often incomplete or fragmentary sources.
A research that over time has also become a work of relationship and memory. Picolli contacted the families of numerous victims, collecting testimonies and materials and trying to maintain, at every stage of the project, a direct relationship with those stories personally experienced them. A journey carried out with particular attention and a deep sense of respect towards victims and their families. According to the data collected, 230 people died in the World Trade Center towers, 159 within one of the two towers, 17 aboard the hijacked flights and 5 to the Pentagon.
For each victim the project collects, when available, photography, age, place of residence. The list was built by identifying in the official registers the names attributable to an Italian origin. A criterion necessarily imperfect, which is why the project remains open to reports, integrations and corrections, even by families.
“I wanted to identify and remember every Italian who died in that tragedy, individually, so that their memory does not belong only to us but is transmitted to our children and grandchildren. I will always bring with me the many stories I have collected: I will keep them in a precious forziere that will keep our memory as Italians abroad.”.
The work takes shape through a consultable website and a publication dedicated to the 411 victims, conceived as a place of memory destined to grow over time with new photographs, information and testimonies. The project also includes a tricolor flag composed of the names of the victims, inspired by the American “Flag of Honor”.
