The “Premio Michele Schiavone” was born: an international recognition dedicated to silent heroes of Italian emigration

The General Council of Italians in the East announces the establishment of the Michele Schiavone Prize “hero of the daily and protector of the diaspora”; an international recognition destined to value people, associations and entities that have distinguished themselves in the protection of the rights of Italians in the world and in the promotion of the human, social and cultural heritage of our migration. The prize is dedicated to the memory of Michele Schiavone, already Counselor and then Secretary General of the CGIE from 2016 to 2024, a symbol of civil commitment to the Italian communities beyond borders, prematurely disappeared after a life dedicated to Italians in the world with altruism, generosity and spirit of service.

The initiative stems from the awareness that the history of our diaspora – almost two centuries long and marked by sacrifices, obstacles, civil battles and social conquests – is filled with “silent heroes” who have transformed the destiny of entire communities, affecting public policies, institutional practices and social attitudes in the countries of arrival and in Italy.

The Prize, at an annual rate, is aimed at a person, an association and an entity who have worked in favour of Italian or Italian emigrants in any country of the world, contributing to the advancement of their rights and to the valorization of the role of our diaspora in contemporary societies.

Applications must be sent to the CGIE secretariat by 31 December of the year prior to the award (except for the launch of the Prize in 2026, will be admitted until 28 February) and will be evaluated by a Jury chaired by the Secretary General of the CGIE and formed by the Presidency Committee and high institutional personalities and the information world, including the Secretary General of the Farnesina and the President of the Dante Alighieri Society. Honorary President of the Prize is the Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

The awards will take place within the CGIE Plenary Assembly, to which the three winners will be invited as guests. The motivations and names of the winners will be published and disseminated by the General Council of Italians in the Far East.
