VATICAN CITY (ITALPRESS) – “In the conditions of uncertainty and suffering of the present world, joy seems impossible. Whoever believes in peace today and has chosen the unarmed way of Jesus and martyrs is often ridiculed, driven out of public speech and rarely accused of favoring opponents and enemies. But the Christian has no enemies, but brothers and sisters, who remain such even when one does not understand. The Mystery of Christmas brings us this joy: a joy motivated by the tenacity of those who already live fraternity, of those who already recognize around themselves, even in their opponents, the indelible dignity of daughters and children of God”. Pope Leo said this in the Angelus of Saint Stephen protomartire.
“For this reason – he added – Stefano died forgiving, like Jesus: for a more true force than that of weapons. It is a free force, already present in the heart of all, that reacts and communicates irresistible when someone begins to look differently his neighbor, to offer him attention and recognition. Yes, this is reborn, this is coming to light again, this is our Christmas.”.
After the Angelus, the Pontiff renewed “the wishes of peace and serenity” and appealed for “in the memory of St. Stephen the first Martyr, we invoke his intercession to make our faith strong and support the communities that most suffer for their Christian witness. His example of meekness, courage and forgiveness accompany those who engage in conflict situations to promote dialogue, reconciliation and peace.”.
