The handshake with the Pope, the long and sincere embrace with Giorgia Meloni. Ukrainian president Zelensky concludes his tour, diplomatic and dramatic, in Rome and puts together, in the form of appeal and hope, two different figures but on which it counts to go out, as they say, from the corner of the geopolitical bite in which it is finished. The spiritual leader of the Catholic West, Leo XIV, American but with his independent vision in foreign policy, renews his commitment to a just peace and to the involvement of Europe. The Italian premier promises a delicate and difficult mediation, but invites Zelensky to a factual realism and not to stretch the times for a truce before and for a peace then.
Of course, that hug is for Giorgia Meloni an international symbolic success. He has always maintained the line of military aid in Kiev, according to European partners and NATO. He has corrected the words of Admiral Cavo Dragone, current president of the Military Committee of the Atlantic Alliance and previously Chief of Staff of Italian Defence, on a Europe too passive and that, in perspective, must become more aggressive in the matter of security. He has managed the different sensibilities about sending weapons to Ukraine in his majority (symmetries, in some ways, to the different positions that are in the so-called progressive field) and above all he has managed the malumori of a public opinion, that of our country, which has been puzzled on a supposed perennial peace, on a world in perfect balance that does not change and that instead is changing in a convulsive and often disturbing way.
He is bringing home a strict and transparent budget law, where citizens must understand that equipping themselves for a new future less sweet and living does not mean taking away money to health and family. That “I trust her”, said by a Zelensky stremated by war, internal scandals and a plan of peace that by force of things (including military force on the field) will not be what his people dreamed, just as exhausted, in short, that act of explicit and mediatic trust on our premier tells you long about how Italy has returned authoritative and “reliable” in the world.
Then, in concrete, what can Giorgia do? Surely he will talk to Trump, certainly he will be a bridge for a Europe that, besides the narratives and verbal provocations, remains an important protagonist. He will do it with honesty and seriousness: the giants of the Earth can and must be explained. Then the reality is that journalists like me, who do not sing in the mainstream of politically correct every day, have long been saying on the basis of data and analyses made by experts and by those on the field.
Ukraine must make painful concessions, but save itself for the future. Donbass and Crimea are in fact lost, but Odessa and Kiev can be saved, and you can save at least one future in the European Union, beyond scandals for corruption and with regular political elections when you can do. Above all, you must stop dying and destroy every day. Too many lives have already been sacrificed, at the door of our wonderful democratic civilization, which we will have to defend with the intelligence of reality and not with the ideological grammar of values in words.
