The Bronx and Manhattan call for an independent investigation into ICE shooting

Following Brad Hoylman-Sigal’s conviction, a joint request from the presidents of Manhattan and the Bronx comes: an independent investigation into Marble Hill’s shooting and the publication of images recorded by the cameras worn by the ICE agents. On Friday, October 9, Hoylman-Sigal and Vanessa L. Gibson issued a statement that disputes both the procedures of the operation and what happened to the injured man in the following hours.

“Today the Bronx and Manhattan are united in indignation”, the two presidents wrote, recalling that in the car against which an agent shot was also the son of five years of man. «The frustration, pain, anger and trauma caused by this episode go far beyond a single person».

The shooting took place on Thursday afternoon during an operation by the federal immigration agency. Oscar Belgal, 28, had been hit on his neck and taken to the NewYork-Presbyterian Allen Hospital in stable conditions. According to the city police, at least one officer had exploded seven shots. The child was physically ill and had been entrusted to a family member.

In the new statement, Gibson and Hoylman-Sigal insist mainly on the transfer of man after the shelter. “It is outrageous that, just a few hours after being struck, he was taken away from the hospital by the ICE agents and, according to the report, transferred to a detention facility outside the State of New York”.

More precise information emerged on this point. According to Friday in court, Belgal was initially transferred to New Jersey and then to the Metropolitan Detention Center, the federal prison in Brooklyn. Her rash, Paige Austin, said she could only talk to him on Friday afternoon, after the lawyers couldn’t track him for almost a day. He added that the man still had a bullet in his body and felt pain.

A federal judge temporarily blocked his expulsion while examining the appeal against detention. The measure also restricts further transfers to the structures included in the federal courts Southern and Eastern New York and New Jersey District, but does not have scarceness.

Gibson and Hoylman-Sigal define “dangerous and unacceptable” the impunity with which, in their opinion, ICE men operate. “It’s a fear and intimidation operation that compromises public security and makes us less secure,” they write.

On Friday, NYPD released footage of its wearable camera, showing the next shooting. In the film, a federal agent appears with a yard vest, an ICE badge and a rifle; the police officers then lift the wounded and charge him on a car to take him to the hospital.

The federal authorities have provided a more articulated version than the first communiqué. They claim that Belgal hit two ICE vehicles with his own car and accelerated to other agents, causing them to fear for their lives. Surveillance images spread so far show bourgeois men approaching the car with their guns and driving away, but do not document the maneuver described by the authorities as a vehicle use against agents.

This is why the call for ICE shooting is fundamental: the Secretary of Homeland Security Markwayne Mullin confirmed the existence of cameras worn by the agents, without saying if there is a date for their publication. On the episode they investigate the federal authorities; also the district attorney of the Bronx, Darcel Clark, announced that his office is examining the shooting.

Gibson and Hoylman-Sigal therefore join the associations and other elected representatives who call for an “independent and transparent” investigation. The statement closes with a request directly addressed to the federal administration: “New York is a city of immigrants and, despite all Donald Trump’s efforts, we will never stop defending our immigrant neighbors. The ICE should have left New York for a long time.”.
