A 51-year-old man was stabbed at the early hours of Wednesday morning in a Lower Manhattan metro station, during a sudden altercation with a stranger. The attack took place around 5:20 on the Broadway–Lafayette Street Station, an important hub of the New York network served by several lines and daily frequented by commuters to work.
According to the police, the victim was on the steps when a man started arguing with him. The fight quickly degenerated: the attacker pulled a knife and hit the 51-year-old at the lower back, causing him different injuries. The man was rescued and transported to Bellevue Hospital, where he was admitted in stable conditions.
The assailant, described only as a man of clear complexion and without any known connection to the victim, fled immediately after the attack and is still sought after. The NYPD has made it clear that at the moment there are no useful elements to clarify the origin of the diverb. Episodes of random violence at the metro stations, especially at night and dawn, are not so rare in New York: In recent years the city administration has increased the presence of agents and patrols in major hubs, such as Times Square–42nd Street or Union Square, but sudden attacks are not easy to stem for the little predictability.
