In the new Roma-com set in the Tuscan hills, You, Me & Tuscany, next to international stars like Halle Bailey and Regé-Jean Page, there is a name that is conquering public and critical: Stella Pecollo. With the character of Francesca — overwhelming, ironic and authentic — she became the real “scene-stealer” of the film.
Stella, everyone talks about you as the real revelation of the film. Did you expect this impact?
Absolutely not, even if I have to confess that the Universal Studios had already given me beautiful confirmations during the shooting, adding some scenes in progress
Your character, Francesca, is one of the most beloved: how would you describe it in three words?
Sparkling, true, passionate
Is there anything about you inside Francesca or was it a completely built job?
No doubt there are parts of me in Francesca, especially the physical comedy and some jokes that I got to improvise
This movie is a classic rom-com but with a modern touch: what makes it special to you?
Unlike the classic Roma Com This film also speaks a lot of family and a sense of belonging, of course there is also love and romantic scenes, in addition to comedy, but its strong point in my opinion is precisely that
The audience reacts a lot to your scenes: how important was the comic timing between Italy and the Anglo-Saxon world?
Surely it was an important point for me to be practically bilingual, in fact one of the reasons why my director told me to have chosen me is my ability to understand very well the American comedy timing while being Italian
You helped rewrite part of your character, especially to avoid stereotypes: how important it was for you?
It was beautiful and for this reason I am grateful to the director Kat Coiro who listened to me and put in place changes that brought depth to my character without stereotypes, in every work I do try to carry out also my “fights” and for me this was a great victory
Today Hollywood always talks about inclusiveness: do you think Francesca really signs a step forward?
Absolutely! And for a very simple reason: because he is himself, unpologetically, he is confident, he is comfortable with his own body and during the film he never mentions anything about his physicality or the fact that he has problems related to it, as often happens
The film is set in Tuscany, but for you it is also a return to the origins: what emotion has been shooting in Italy?
It was a “full circle moment”, three years after my departure to Los Angeles, returning home making a film for Universal Studios was a beautiful victory, and of course amusing and it was nice to see friends and my family on the occasion of my birthday that happened in the same period!
Are you actress, singer, author: how important it is today to be a “multiform” artist?
For me it is a natural thing because I do it as a child, and I must say that in Italy often this thing is seen as a “stranezza” while in the USA it is almost the norm and is still seen as a positive thing. For me the best thing is to do everything I love and express all my talents together!
After this success, what do we expect from Stella Pecollo? Is there already a “after Tuscany”?
The public acclaimed a sequel and also I cross my fingers because I would love to do as it was for “my fat big Greek wedding”, for the rest I have some international projects in the yard and I am trying to bring my book “I am beautiful” that came out in Italy for Mondadori also in the USA, and I have a couple of projects in construction just linked to the book.
