PALERMO (ITALPRESS) – New safety devices on board the ambulances of 118 in Sicily. The SEUS continues on the path of technological implementation of the means of rescue by introducing a portable carbon monoxide detector, designed to strengthen the protection of the operators during the interventions. To announce the initiative was the president of the SEUS 118 Region Sicily, Riccardo Castro, who explained the novelty during an interview with Italpress. The introduction of the detectors, about 260, also comes to the light of previous critical episodes, including that occurred in 2025 in Zafferana Etnea, and fits into a wider strategy of prevention and safety on the places of intervention: “We are always careful about these dynamics, we wanted to acquire and equip every ambulance of a portable device that is a carbon monoxide detector, to be more and more consistent with the security aspects of our operators. Obviously once the detector reports the presence of carbon monoxide will be contacted the competent bodies for the problem, which are obviously the firefighters”. The chosen device is a portable digital carbon monoxide detector model TG-2233. It is a battery-powered instrument with an electrochemical sensor lasting up to ten years, able to monitor in real time the concentration of CO in the air through an integrated display. The detector is able to detect concentrations between 10 and 258 ppm (parts per million) and signals three different levels of danger – low, high and dangerous – triggering a 85 decibel sound alarm. The device also stores the maximum level of monoxide recorded in the last four weeks, allowing constant monitoring of exposures. Thanks to battery operation and removable support, it can be easily transported and used in different operating contexts, ensuring greater flexibility during emergency interventions. The introduction of the detectors is a further step in strengthening the safety standards for rescuers and for all personnel engaged in health emergency activities in the territory of the Sicily Region. Among the priorities of SEUS governance there is also the theme of personnel safety on the front of aggression. President Castro confirmed a study phase to identify effective prevention tools. “We are trying to carry out a device, just a deterrent, that can be effective against this phenomenon that I have repeatedly reported, against my SEUS boys and all the other operators of the 118 Sicilian. We want to equip ourselves with a device against aggression that we are evaluating for now, clearly with the offices and then it will also be our care to address the issue with the Prefecture. For now, of course, we are in an embryonic evaluation phase.”.
