Schlein “There is still so much to do to fight the mob. In addition to repression we must talk about prevention”

PALERMO (ITALPRESS) – “It is a pleasure to participate in Ligami di memoria, an important initiative that is also an opportunity to reflect on how the legacy of extraordinary people is still alive such as Paolo Borsellino and Giovanni Falcone: there is still so much to do to counter mafias, their infiltrations in the legal economy, in institutions and politics, the way they do interests and in which they lead. This is said by the secretary of the Pd Elly Schlein in the margin of “Memory Leagues”, meeting at the Paolo and Rita Borsellino Study Centre in Palermo. “Only a few months ago, right here in Palermo, I met some exhibitors affected by mafia intimidation at Sferracavallo – adds Schlein. They should not be left alone, they need a hug from the whole community not only a small town but also a regional and national one.”.

“It is necessary to continue raising the guard and legality, especially in years when important investments have come, and to do the opposite of what has been done for example with the introduction of the subcontract in the code of contracts: at the end of the long chains of contracts the job is less secure, the workers are more blackmailable, it is more difficult to do controls and it is easier to enter for the criminal interests of the mafia – he added. The effort of the institutions and of all politics must be to make these controls more effective: the battle against organized crime is not only repression or strengthen the precious and irreplaceable work that every day make judiciary and law enforcement forces against the mafia, but it is also a cultural battle that must start from the schools to challenge the omerity and indifference; it is a battle that first concerns the state and public policies, The state must arrive first with the support against poverty, against the support of firms in difficulty in a country where we know that there has been a decline in industrial production for three consecutive years and in which unfortunately wages are among the lowest in Europe, but energy bills are among the most expensive”.

“Some of the choices made in these years unfortunately go in the wrong direction, both when you chose to raise the roof of the cash and with the introduction of the subcontract in the code of contracts: next to the issue of repression, on which you must not attack the judges but support the work that they do every day in contrast to the organized crime, you have to talk about prevention and on this unfortunately the funds have been reduced to the municipalities for social policies,” he said. “Years ago, right in Palermo in the Borgo Nuovo district, I met teachers who told me the difficulty they have with boys who leave the school early, or they often skip the lessons – continues Schlein -. These boys said to them that even if they came to school this wouldn’t help them get a better future. It must not be so, it must not be this perspective: just from the schools it is necessary to make a great investment, because that is the first place of contrast to the inequalities, in which to build the foundations for having a dignified and not precarious or subpaid work”.

“We must do all so that here we find quality work and there is no blackmail from criminal organizations who try to enlist even among the very young – concludes Schlein –: the mob continues to strike also violently and that threat affects the whole society; we must not allow it, if society responds compact and rejects the blackmail of criminous organizations they will find themselves more isolated and it will be easier to strike them.
