San Raffaele Milano and Smart Clinic Roma for the prevention of colorectal cancer

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – Prevention as the first defence tool. It is the message launched, on the occasion of the European month of the prevention of colorectal cancer, by the IRCS Ospedale San Raffaele in Milan and Gruppo San Donato, of which is also part Smart Clinic Roma Villa Borghese, the first Smart Clinic of Capital, part of a national network that aims at prevention, accessibility and quality of care, a model that allows to intercept the health needs on the territory and, when necessary, to accompany the patients. The Unit of Colorful Surgery of the IRCCCS Hospital San Raffaele, with which he collaborates with Smart Clinic and directed by Professor Pierpaolo Sileri, also Proctor at the Didactic and Ordinary of General Surgery at the University Vita-Salute San Raffaele, is in fact a recognized excellence at national and international level, where technology, research, training and attention to the patient integrate in a multidisciplinary approach. “Premature diagnosis is mainly due to the screening, which begins after 50 years offered free of charge by the regions, through the fecal occult blood – Professor Sileri explained – If the fecal occult blood gives a positive outcome the path foresees colonoscopy, while for patients with suspicious symptoms it is possible to evaluate endoscopic examination after a taking into account by the general medical doctor or specialist. An equipe dedicated to colorectal surgery, permanently inserted in the everyday clinical practice of the structure, increases the ability to intercept even very initial signals, often underestimated by the patient, allowing a more early diagnosis and a timely treatment of pathology”. The colorectal cancer is one of the most widespread neoplasms in our country, with about 50,000 new diagnoses each year. It is a cancer that today is less fearful than the past: thanks to screening, early diagnosis and increasingly targeted therapies, survival exceeds 65% and mortality is steadily decreasing. In recent years, however, there is an increase in cases even in younger people, between 40 and 50 years, making prevention even more important. “ This is an increase still contained, but now significant, which imposes greater attention to the possible signals of the disease – said Professor Sileri – also because the tumor of the rectum is often subdule and can develop initially in the absence of symptoms, through cell alterations of the intestine”. For this reason, state-of-the-art facilities such as the IRCC San Raffaele Hospital in Milan are an important resource in the fight against colorectal cancer. “Surely, interaction and multidisciplinaryity allow you to promote cutting-edge care – concluded Sileri – at San Raffaele Hospital you can access highly advanced care and technologically innovative protocols.” In recent years, in fact, technological advances have made possible the treatment of colorectal cancer through techniques of mini-nvasive surgery, today increasingly widespread in high-specialization centers. “Modern colorectal surgery is mainly minimal – Professor Sileri explained – and is performed through small abdominal accesses or with the support of robotic surgery, which allows a high precision of the intervention. This approach results in a faster recovery for the patient, in a reduction of the surgical impact and in the possibility to start early any subsequent therapies, with benefits on health at 360 degrees.”.
