Referendum, Nordio “I don’t quit, I still have many things to do”

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – “It is part of politics to lose elections. I don’t consider it a personal defeat. It was a reform in which I believed and in which I think I made all the effort possible. I was sure we’d win. I bow to the sovereign people. But I don’t think I quit. I still have a lot to do, although some reforms will stop.” Thus, in an interview with Corriere della Sera, the Minister of Justice Carlo Nordio.

“For example, the limitation of precautionary custody could be more difficult,” he said, “we must devote ourselves to the efficiency of justice. Taking it with philosophy we say that defeat saves us a lot of time that we should have dedicated to implementing decrees to do all this.”.

Then, he explains: “I think there has been a difficult communication on a complex subject. We tried to explain with simple words, but we couldn’t escape the fear that the Constitution would be ‘fall'”.

Wasn’t it a danger to fear? “Yes – he observes – but it is false. It has already been changed several times. But it is a theme on which there is always a difficulty to welcome the new”. Mr Nordio says: “In reality they have never presented an acceptable one. They always said if you want to discuss before you withdraw the bill. Thus the Am, who immediately decreed the strike. And they preferred to launch the emotional alarm. Completely unfounded: we were willing to dialogue.”.

What now? “We are always willing to discuss. But after the ‘niet’ we deal with efficiency,” the minister asked.
