ROMA (ITALPRESS) – “To ensure that tomorrow’s food needs are met, it is necessary to free the production of food from a purely speculative mentality. Bread should not be neither a geopolitical pressure tool nor a volatile financial asset. It must never be used as a weapon of war.” Thus Pope Leo XIV in a message on the occasion of World Food Day 2026, written on the eve of his shelter at the Gemini.
“In fact, to prevent bread from reaching a person or destroying the means by which it is produced constitutes a terrible offense to human dignity. The bread is precious because it supports the life that God has given us. We must therefore overcome the temptation of a short-term vision,” he added. According to the Holy Father “the myth according to which growth can be infinite despite the limited resources has reached the breaking point. Today innovation requires the adoption of a sense of intergenerational responsibility that looks beyond the annual budgets. Innovation means reconciling technology with wisdom, including the ancestral one, while maintaining a vision for the future. It is not a question of rejecting technological advances, but rather of integrating them with the wisdom of the peasants, who have matured their knowledge of the earth and the climate through centuries of conscientious observation. This also involves water protection as an inalienable common good,” he concluded.
