ROMA (ITALPRESS) – “To stop violence against women we must begin with the formation of young people. We must remove this violence and seek the way to form the mentality, we must be people of peace.” Thus Pope Leo XIV speaking of violence against women in response to a letter written by Giovanna da Roma in the magazine Piazza San Pietro, anticipated today by Corriere della Sera.
“She poses – the Pontiff writes – a great problem that for me is always a source of great suffering: violence in relationships, and in particular violence against women. In a world often dominated by violent thought, the female genius should be supported even more, as St. John Paul II said, the “genius of women”, protagonists and creators of a culture of care and fraternity indispensable to give future and dignity to all humanity. Perhaps even for this reason women are affected and killed, because they are a sign of contradiction in this confused, uncertain and violent society, because they indicate values of faith, freedom, equality, generation, hope, solidarity and justice. They are great values, which instead are fought by a dangerous mentality that infests relations producing only selfishness, prejudices, discrimination and will of domination. This attitude, as I said during the homily of the Solemnity of Pentecost (June 8, 2025) during the Holy Mass of the Jubilee of movements, associations and new communities, “often flows into violence, as unfortunately demonstrates the numerous and recent cases of feministration”. Violence, whatever violence, is the frontier that divides civilization from barbarism. We must never underestimate an act of violence and we are not afraid to denounce violence, including that justificationist climate or that it mitigates or denies responsibility. Walking together in mutual respect for one’s humanity is not a dream, but the only possible reality to build a world of light for all. Dear Giovanna, I thank you for your efforts on the need for an ever stronger educational alliance. The Church with families, school, parishes, movements and associations, religious congregations, public institutions can together share the urgency to carry out specific projects to prevent and stop violence on women.”.
