ROMA (ITALPRESS) – The care continues beyond the room, beyond the gym, in the movement, in the relationship with animals and in contact with a natural and protected environment. This is the vision at the center of “Health looks to the future”, the initiative scheduled on October 5 at the San Giovanni Battista Hospital in Rome, specialized in motor and neurological rehabilitation.
The morning will open at 10.30 with the reception of guests in the Courtyard of the Castle of Magliana. At 11.00 institutional interventions and deepening. At 12.30 will officially open the new area dedicated to animal-assisted therapy, with a demonstration of physiotherapy activity with horses and the subsequent visit to the spaces of the Live Forest and the Rehabilitative Garden.
The October appointment completes the path started on 26 June with the end of the work and the initiation of the new rehabilitation area to the Nando Foundation and Elsa Peretti, which financed the initiative. The area dedicated to assisted horse care today extends for about 7,700 square meters, while the park-bosco occupies about 14,500 square meters: redeveloped spaces to expand rehabilitative opportunities and offer patients opportunities for recovery, relationship and leisure even outdoors.
Horse-assisted therapy has for years been one of the characteristic activities of the San Giovanni Battista Hospital and takes place within the equestrian area of the hospital complex, one of the few in Italy. The project, launched in 2016, involved thousands of patients, including people leaving the coma, victims of road accidents and patients with Parkinson’s disease. According to the data collected by the Hospital, 92% of the treated patients achieved the rehabilitation objectives. The work with horses flanks the motor recovery and also contributes to the relational, cognitive and emotional dimension of the treatment path. The Bosco Vivo and the Rehabilitative Garden further expand this setting, offering outdoor spaces, sensory experiences and moments of participation. The value of the initiative lies right here: not simply add a place to the hospital complex, but extend the possibilities of rehabilitation and build an increasingly complete path around the person. At 11.00 Lorenzo Borghese, President of the Italian Association of the Order of Malta, will open the meeting. Among the institutional interventions already confirmed, that of Marcello Gemmato, Undersecretary of State to the Ministry of Health, of Svetlana Celli, President of the Capitoline Assembly, of Antonello Aurigemma, President of the Regional Council of Lazio, of Francesco Rocca, President of the Lazio Region. The moment of deepening will continue with Edoardo Bellomo, Director General of Health Activities, who will illustrate the health activities of the Order of Malta between innovation, rehabilitation and new horizons of care, and with Tommasangelo Petitti, Director of Health of the Order of Malta, who will deepen the contribution of the Assisted Therapy with animals in treatment and rehabilitation.
Finally, President Lorenzo Borghese will look at the 150th anniversary celebrations of the Italian Association of the Order of Malta in 2027. The initiative will also be an opportunity to tell a medical history of almost 150 years and, together, its ability to evolve: clinical competence, innovation and attention to the person as elements of a single idea of care. The Association of Italian Knights of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta (ACISMOM) has been carrying out health care on the Italian territory since 1877, the year of its foundation.
Today assistance is provided through the Hospital San Giovanni Battista, in the district of Magliana in Rome, specialized in motor and neurological rehabilitation. With its 240 beds, the Hospital manages over 80.000 days of shelter a year in cooperation with the National Health Service. The San Giovanni Battista Hospital, which in 2022 celebrated the fifty years of activity, is equipped with a highly specialized awakening unit in the treatment of those who came out of the coma. In addition to the hospital, the Order of Malta manages in Lazio, Liguria, Campania and Puglia a territorial network of 4 polyambulators, 6 medical and diabetologic centers and 3 dental centers for a total of more than 1.5 million health services per year. Important is the commitment to the fight against diabetes. Over 50,000 patients with this pathology are assisted by the Italian structures of the Order of Malta. One of the most relevant clinical networks in this area. The Association has 900 employees and employees. Of these, 80% are healthcare personnel (medical, nurses, rehabilitation technicians, radiologists and socio-sanitary operators). The remaining 20% is made up of administrative, support staff.
