A violent attack shocked the morning of New York, where a man armed with machetes attacked several passers-by inside the Grand Central Terminal, one of the most busy rail hubs in the world. The budget is three wounded people, all elderly, while the attacker was killed by the police, promptly intervened on the spot.
The episode occurred between 9:30 and 9:50 local time, when the man began to hit the present with a large cutting weapon, sowing the panic between commuters and tourists. According to the first reconstructions, the victims – between 65 and 85 years old – were met by more defenders and transported urgently to the hospital. Their conditions were initially described as critical, although in subsequent hours some sources spoke of clinical stabilization.
Eyewitnesses have told scenes of chaos: the attacker has branded the machete against anyone who happened to shoot him, before the arrival of the agents of the New York Police Department. The forces of order, coming quickly, opened fire to stop him, killing him on the spot.
Immediately after the attack, the police invited citizens to avoid the area around the station, causing heavy repercussions on roads and rail service. Several metro lines were deviated and significant delays were recorded in traffic.
The Governor of the State of New York, Kathy Hochul, condemned the incident by calling it an “insensitive act of violence” and expressed closeness to the victims and their families.
At the moment, the identity of the aggressor and the motivations of the gesture remain unknown. Investigators are analyzing surveillance cameras images and collecting evidence to accurately reconstruct the dynamics of the attack.
The episode rekindles the debate on security in the big urban hubs of the city, frequented every day by hundreds of thousands of people, and brings attention to the risks related to sudden violence in high density public spaces.
