The preparations for the next Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade continue, but not without any surprise. In fact, the fans of Netflix ‘n’ Chill will be happy to know that this year’s parade will introduce a fairly unexpected element: a wagon dedicated to the television series Stranger Things, made just in view of the last season of the Netflix series. It is the tradition of the parade to include references to contemporary pop culture, alongside the balloons and musical bands some of the most followed television and film titles in the United States. This time it will be the turn of the Hawkins universe, with its paranormal atmosphere full of references to the 1980s.
The wagon will be called “Invasion of the Subsurface: Stranger Things” and will resume the setting of the “Sottosopra”, the parallel world present in the series. According to Netflix, the wagon will include scenic elements such as dynamic illuminations and a reproduction of the Demogorgone, one of the most recognizable creatures in the series.
The parade has been organized every year since 1924 by Macy’s, one of the largest chains of department stores in the country, and is one of the most followed television events in the United States. It takes place in Manhattan along the 34th street, home to the historic flagship store of the company. The inclusion of content related to streaming platforms has become increasingly frequent in the last decade, in line with the progressive shift of entertainment to digital formats.
The involvement of Stranger Things coincides with the launch of the fifth and final season of the series, which will be published in three moments: Four episodes on November 26, three on Christmas Day and one on New Year’s Eve. The choice of distributing episodes during the holiday season will serve to intercept an audience that, in those days, devotes more time to domestic content and television marathons.
In parallel, Netflix promoted other initiatives dedicated to fans, such as self-guided bike tours in various cities around the world, including New York. The event will be held in Central Park on November 23, on a route of about 6 miles. It is a strategy that falls within the experiential campaigns adopted by the platforms to strengthen public involvement outside the screen, integrating physical and participatory activities with the launch of content.
The Macy’s Parade will begin at 8:30 in the morning of Thanksgiving and end around noon. It will be broadcast live on the NBC and available in streaming on Peacock. For Netflix, the presence in the parade represents an additional promotional channel in a context of strong competition in the entertainment sector, where event outputs and collaborations with popular events continue to be a tool widely used by major platforms.
