The National Unity Day opens with a statement by the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella: “On March 17, it celebrates the achievement of the National Unity, the recognition of Italy as a sovereign state, the crowning of aspirations and civil commitment that characterized the Risorgimento season, solemnly reaffirmed in the struggle of Liberation, which allowed the country to regain its freedom with its unity, recomponing the institutional and political fracture determined by contemporary Nazi occupation, building Italy.
The “Day of National Unity, Constitution, Inno and Flag” recalls fundamental elements of the identity of the Republic: independence, popular sovereignty, freedom, justice and peace. These are values matured along a complex historical path and not devoid of afflictions, which finds its highest and accomplished expression in the Constitution, authentic presidium of the rights and responsibilities that define our national community. Unity is not only a political-institutional order, but it is a profound and shared ideal, which crosses and interprets the entire historical history of our country. Constitution, Song of Italians and Tricolors are symbols of a community based on participation, solidarity and respect for democratic institutions and each person.
It is this heritage of values that the anniversary of March 17 invites to renew and transmit, in particular to young generations, in a constant and open dialogue. To them, called to face profound transformations and global challenges of unpublished complexity, the institutions are obliged to offer guidance, trust and responsibility, so that they can contribute fully to the construction of the country’s future. In an international context marked by tensions, conflicts and the emergence of dynamics of opposition and hegemonic aspirations that disturb the world balance, the principles that inspired the birth of the Republic and which find expression in our Constitutional Charter and are anchored in the Charter of the United Nations are firm reference point.
On March 17, it is the Day that renews the call for civil commitment. Invited to safeguard and implement, with coherence and foresight, the principles of freedom, justice and peace on which the Republic is founded, so that they continue to lead the action of institutions and society in the pursuit of peaceful, solidarity and authentically democratic coexistence, in Italy and in the international community”.
