Meloni in San Patrignano: “Dope makes slaves and slaves are not free”

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – “I am proud to have lit the spotlights of Europe on this place, on what it teaches. I am proud that so many delegations have accepted our invitation and have come here to visit this factory of hope and freedom that helps those who have lost their way.” Thus the President of the Council, Giorgia Meloni, San Patrignano, for the international high-level meeting of the European Coalition against Drugs (ECAD) on the prevention of addictions and recovery, promoted by Italy and France.

“We have a duty to put all our determination into the field to fight every drug and to choke those illegal trafficking that feed dependencies and make slaves for people for money. Every time the drug is banalized or even ennobled and associated with a winning behavior, there is a person who is likely to be abandoned in the face of a danger that might overwhelm it,” he added.

“In too many contexts it continues to say that drugs would be a choice of freedom, even almost a right to guarantee. I think the boys who are here know better than me because it is not true, I think that those who have really experienced that world from that drug have nothing to do with the concept of freedom, or with the concept of law because the drug makes you slave and slaves are not free and have no rights for antonomasia. San Patrignano was a pioneering reality and represents something unique and exceptional. It seemed natural and useful to show coalition partners this reality as a tool to understand concretely what we mean when we talk about recovery. Recovering – he added – means recovering, for Latins meant to get back in possession of something that had been lost or stolen. It is exactly what happens every day for about 50 years in this place. To those who come here nobody asks to erase their past, but to go back to their lives, everything that the drug has ripped away.”.

“Prevention must take place first of all and must begin as soon as possible, must speak to young people, families, schools and universities, must reach the digital environments, must engage the media in a work of correct information much more than has been done so far. It is in this direction that we have started a profitable interlocution with the main networks to correct misleading messages that too often we have heard in the past,” Meloni continued.

“Recovery is the ultimate goal of everything we do, only when a person can find a job, rebuild relationships, regain their place in the community can finally be free. This place gives us a certainty: that no one is lost forever, that every life can be regained. This is the commitment we must take together today, not give up in front of traffickers, in front of those who banalize drugs and not give up in front of a boy who seems lost because he is not,” he added.
