Meloni hears Starmer on de-escalation in the Middle East. Today London presides over Iran and Hormuz

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – The President of the Council, Giorgia Meloni, had a telephone conversation with the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Keir Starmer, for an exchange of security assessments in the Strait of Hormuz. As a note from Palazzo Chigi reports, the two leaders have deepened the impact of the crisis on regional stability and world energy markets, with particular attention to relapses for national economies. In the course of the interview, the common concern for the security threats of the partners in the area was renewed, reaffirming the importance of close cooperation with the Gulf countries. In underlining the interest of the international community to the full protection of freedom of navigation, Meloni and Starmer agreed to maintain a constant coordination for initiatives aimed at de-escalation and to guarantee the safety of commercial routes in the area.

As a note of Downing Street states, the need for “de-escalation” was reaffirmed in urgent times. The importance of a reopening of the Strait of Hormuz was also highlighted. On today’s day, the United Kingdom presides over a virtual Foreign Minister on Iran and the Strait of Hormuz, attended by about 35 countries. For Italy, the Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani participates in videotaping.

The meeting followed the adoption of the Declaration promoted by the United Kingdom on 19 March and signed by 35 countries including Italy. The Declaration recalls the willingness to participate in coordinated efforts to ensure the safe passage of ships, support freedom of navigation and stabilize energy markets. Today, in addition to the signatories of the Declaration, Turkey, the Philippines, Malaysia, India, Poland and the European Union are among the invited guests. The adoption of a joint document is not expected today.
