Mattarella “The threat of using nuclear weapons is a crime against humanity”

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – “In the current context, it is necessary to reiterate strongly that use or even the only concrete threat to introduce a crime against humanity appears in nuclear weapons conflicts.” Thus the president of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, at the ceremony of the exchange of wishes of the end of the year with the Diplomatic Corps at the Quirinale.

“What has happened, what is happening if the leading protagonists of the old international order propose, with their behaviour, to give life to a new order based on overwhelming with every means, violence, war, conquest, competition between States for the provision of resources, thus trying to perpetuate inequalities among peoples? It must be rejected the hypothesis that these can be the values around which to build a new order,” added the head of the state.

“I am the prevalence of law, respect for the rules that the community has given itself, to prevent the conflict, to promote the overcoming of inequalities – Mattarella continued – This perspective was abruptly dissolved less than 4 years ago: a protagonist of the international community, the Russian Federation, has skilfully chosen to overwhelm this path, restoring with force the anti-historical search for zones of influence, of territorial conquest, of cruel prepotence of weapons”, said Mattarella.

“The broadest hope remains to see peace and stability in the Middle East region. These considerations cannot ignore the peaceful coexistence, in the security of the Israeli and Palestinian peoples, within the framework of the solution to two States, which must be supported and defended by any attempt to compromise practicability. There are no others,” said Mattarella.

“Europe and Italy remain firmly at the side of Ukraine and its people, with the aim of fair, just, lasting peace, respectful of international law, independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity, security of Ukraine,” he concluded.
