Mattarella receives an honorary degree in Florence: “There is the claim to act outside the rules of states”

FIRENZE (ITALPRESS) – “Contemporaryity is imposing revolutionary challenges in the international and economic order, with evident reflections on institutional spheres.” This was said by the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella, during the conferment of the honorary master degree on the occasion of the 150 years of the School of Political Science Cesare Alfieri of the University of Florence. “The protagonists of global scenarios, with great and growing influence on the daily life of individuals and communities, are technological and financial subjects. There are often two aspects. This is not completely new phenomena. New is the claim to break down the commitments made after World War II to give order to international relations on the basis of equality between States. The claim, in fact, is to act outside the rules of States and supranational bodies, eroding the sovereignty of the first and the increasing positive role of the second,” added the head of the state.

“I would like to take the opportunity to underline how our constituent assembly benefited greatly from the contribution of men of culture, scholars of different orientation who joined it, alongside the most schiettamente political component. Culture and science are for them authentic nature open to interlocution, they do not claim to possess absolute truths, are inclined to find points of encounter, to reach mediations, without renouncing to affirm principles and values. This – he added – made possible our Constitution: an authentic and profound collaboration, among scholars and political representatives, in laying the foundations for the rebirth of Italy in the sign of democracy”.
