ROMA (ITALPRESS) – “Benedetto Croce, intellectual of the first floor of the world cultural scene and Italian political figure of great importance, was a master, whose research has embraced many disciplines of humanistic knowledge, from art to philosophy, from literary criticism to historiography, handing down an inexhaustible source of knowledge. For Cross, the cultural component was an indispensable element for the enrichment of society and a good to protect and spread for collective progress. The “religion of freedom”, highlighted in his “History of Europe in the tenth century” inspired all his action. This is said by the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, on the occasion of the 160th anniversary of the birth of Benedict Croce.
“Senator of the Kingdom of Italy, he was Minister of Public Education, promoting measures to ensure the quality of the school system and to safeguard the country’s artistic and landscape heritage,” he added.
“In 1925 he was the author of the Manifesto of writers, professionals and publicists who opposed the Manifesto of intellectuals of fascism: Cross led a tenacious action of contrast to the fascist ideology, opposing, even the Senate, the liberticide laws of the regime – Mattarella continues. Protagonist in the process of institutional transition, he was Minister without portfolio in the Governments Badoglio and Bonomi, to be, subsequently, elected to the Constituent Assembly of the Republic, making a valuable contribution to the process of rebirth of an Italy crossed by the dramas of the world war, and participating in the construction of an advanced democratic order, based on respect for fundamental freedoms. In the 160th anniversary of its birth, the Republic pays tribute to its figure.”.
