FIRENZE (ITALPRESS) – “Today it is evident that the manipulation of information, even through the spread of false news, availing itself of the potential offered by the network, is able to condition public opinion, to direct its orientations and choices. Not only at a commercial level, this phenomenon widely present in everyday experience.” This was said by the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, acting at the opening ceremony of the fifth edition of the Festival of Regions and autonomous Provinces in Florence.
With regard to “artificial intelligence and its widespread and increasing applications, the phenomenon arouses expectations, leads to believe that exceptional progress can be found in the most diverse fields but at the same time nourishes concern that it can become a tool of domination available to a few and at the expense of the rights and dignity of many”.
“I would also like to reiterate on this important occasion that it would be a mistake to feed fears or even cultivate the rejection of instruments that already support and can further significantly increase collective well-being – added Mattarella-. However, it is necessary to act quickly and effectively, because it does not prevalence uncontrolled use of this extraordinary technology. It is essential to prepare, apply appropriate regulations.” “The European Union, at the forefront, as it happens in different areas and as it would be wise to recognize, has already set in place a discipline among the most advanced in the international field able to orientate the development and, if necessary, limit the applications of artificial intelligence systems in order to preclude opposing uses with the general interest and fundamental rights,” concluded Mattarella.
“The risk sometimes recognized by Big Tech itself is that the development of models through machine learning can lead to a loss of control of technological processes. The need is to stop an ever more exasperated competition between a limited number of subjects, with outcomes that in the state science is not likely to predict. If we were merely spectators of the expansion, in every direction, of computational power, the fundamental values of the centrality of human life could be prejudiced, and at the same time, of our democracy,” said Mattarella.
