ROMA (ITALPRESS) – Sport, prevention and information new protagonists in the capital with the Run for Liver, the initiative promoted by the Complex Operating Unit of Clinical Medicine and Hepathology of the Fondazione Policlinico Universitario Campus Bio-Medico. Now in its eighth edition, the event took place today in the Trigoria district with the participation of hundreds of people among sportsmen, nurses, doctors and citizens for a morning entirely dedicated to the health of the liver.
The program has provided a 10 km race, both in competitive and non-competitive version, flanked by a walk open to all, with the aim to involve a wide and transversal audience.
The sporting event – organized in collaboration with ACSI Futuratletica and Sport Team Trigoria – took place within the Decima Malafede Nature Reserve, thus offering participants a green setting and particularly suitable for promoting an active and conscious lifestyle.
In addition to the sport activities, the “Village of Health” has been set up at the clinics of the Bio-Medic Campus, where participants have been able to carry out free medical screenings and specialist consulting in different disciplines, including hepathology, sports medicine, endocrinology, cardiology, nutrition and barytric surgery.
“Hepatic pathologies can affect a significant proportion of the population and are closely linked to sedentary lifestyles and dietary imbalances,” explained the Director of the Complex Operating Unit of Clinical Medicine and Epathology of the Bio-Medic Campus Antonio Picardi. “In this context, physical activity is a fundamental tool both in preventive optics and in support of the management of the main diseases affecting the liver.”.
“This event was born precisely with the aim of drawing attention to liver diseases, often silent, promoting greater awareness of the importance of prevention,” added Giovanni Galati, hepatologist and creator of the initiative along with colleagues of the Clinical Medicine Unit and Hepathology. “The liver is a central organ for the proper functioning of the body: it plays a key role in metabolism and contributes significantly to the overall health balance.”.
“In terms of the latest data of the Italian Association for the Study of the Liver (AISF)”, commented Umberto Vespasiani Gentilucci, responsible for the Unit of Autoimmune Diseases and Metabolics of the Phoegate of the Bio-Medium Campus and also member of the AISF Coordinator Committee, “in Italy the metabolic steatosis, commonly called fat liver, affects about 25% of the population, confirming a significant spread”.
The Run for Liver confirms itself as one of the main initiatives with which the Bio-Medium Campus Polyclinic Foundation promotes prevention on the territory, with particular attention to the role of physical activity and the correct lifestyles in the protection of liver health.
Hepatic diseases are a real challenge for public health, also because they often develop in a silent way and are diagnosed in an advanced stage when intervention possibilities are more limited.
According to data from the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL), these diseases affect more than 1.5 billion people worldwide, while only in the European continent about 780 people die daily due to cirrhosis or liver cancer.
In this context, prevention through periodic controls and the adoption of healthy habits – starting from physical activity and proper nutrition – are more effective tools to reduce the risk of complications and early intercept any pathological conditions.
