Investigations on those entering the New York graves

A New York City police are investigating some rather unusual episodes: in recent weeks several people have been seen entering and exiting the graves in some neighborhoods of Brooklyn and Queens. For now there are no arrests, and it is unclear whether there is illegal activity behind it. According to a NYPD official cited by NBC New York, one of the hypotheses is that the group is using the sewerage network to search for finite value objects in wastewater. It’s still a track to check, but it explains at least partly why investigators are treating these episodes as something more than a stunt.

The first report dates back to last Thursday, just after 11:00, in Gravesend, south of Brooklyn. A witness told the police that they saw some people lift a gravel at the intersection of McDonald Avenue and Colin Place and get off the street. The group emerged from the same point about three hours later, around 2 am. In a video released by the police, people come out of the gravel and then change their clothes near some parking cars. Two hours after the first call, another signal came from Williamsburg: seven people had been seen entering a gravel near the intersection of Heyward Street and Bedford Avenue.

Also in that case the group remained underground for a few hours. According to the police, people came out of the same grave after about two and a half hours, went into the car and left. A video published by the local Williamsburg 365 magazine shows the time of the lift: some wore front lamps and had blades and other tools. One of them also risked being hit by a car while leaving the gravel, a sign that the operation didn’t look exactly improvised but not even particularly safe.

A similar episode had been reported on May 5 in Astoria, Queens, between 20th Avenue and 36th Street. In that case three people had been seen opening a gravel and getting off in the sewer network with high fishing boots up to the thigh and electric torches. A witness, interviewed by NBC New York, told that he had watched them while they fell under the street, comparing the scene to the cartoons of the Ninja Turtles. At the moment it has not been established if the three cases are linked together. The New York Department of Environmental Protection said there were no damage to the city’s sewerage network.
