Every square has its own because it has to be investigated. And perhaps now all the people who have manifested in recent times for the Palestinian population deserve a reason, a depth, a motivation that cannot be resolved only in the ideological scheme or in the errors of some groups more or less identified or identifiable. Let’s see why of all the others. Of course, if from the group of young Palestinians of Bologna comes out a written “live on October 7” (the date when in 2023 there was the bloody raid of Hamas in Israel) we can only disdain and condemn, as the mayor of the city, Lepore, who also is of a party, the Pd, very close to these events, the mission of Flotilla, to the reasons of a people, humanitarian and political.
By removing excesses, in what is happening there is the beginning of a mass movement that needs to be read. Friday in Milan the long ProPal procession is paraded under my house: I went down to the edges of the human flow and looked at the cronist face. So many young people, so many students, so many normal people, some historical arnese of the left engagé, but also groups of people held together by what? Perhaps from the idea that even in a fast and superficial society like ours, the flow of images has a democratic value, that is, it weighs in a democracy.
We can see the pictures. And evaluate, think, understand, comment. All we have seen in Gaza in recent months talks about a horror that goes beyond any rational response to a terrorist act and the ethical duty to recover and save the hostages in the hands of Hamas. There has been one more that has now engraved the Western consciousness, the public opinions of Western democracies.
And that I mean it well: it does not mean to foment any feelings or anti-Semitic attitude. It calls upon this government of Israel, not all the Israeli people. The overall story of an alliance with Israel remains, but history does not prevent criticism, even say and maintain a strict attitude by our various institutions.
But to the people who go down on the road we must not explain the realism of diplomacy or the rules of foreign policy. That feeling of defense of people killed or made suffering without guilt has put together people, not by force of all things ideologically equal. This is also the theme of the polls, so even the voters of the centreright think it as big as the voters of the other side. The parties don’t explain everything.
It can also happen in our unidentified era that something lights up a spy, an emotional reaction, a collective participation. It means that reality still has a weight in the social era and that not everything flows obsoletely towards a tomorrow with other obsolete things. It means perhaps that what we called commitment can be rediscovered.
I mean, we’re still alive eventually. The sleep of reason is postponed.
