Government approves decree for the protection of non-agri IGPs, Urso “Choice that strengthens the value of our historical processes”

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – The Council of Ministers, on a proposal from the Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy, has approved a legislative decree that adapts the national order to the Regulation (EU) 2023/2411, introducing a unitary and strengthened protection for the geographical indications of handicraft and industrial products, in analogy with what is already foreseen in the agricultural sector.

“With this measure – said Minister Adolfo Urso – also our typical artisan and industrial products such as Murano glass, Caltagirone ceramics, Goritian lace or Agnone bells, which can now count on a protection that will guarantee its quality and authenticity. A choice that strengthens the value of our historical processes and protects consumers.”.

The decree gives Mimit the role of competent authority for the national phase of the registration procedure of the new Geographical Indications. The registration will be based on a production disciplinary that defines characteristics, requirements and bond with the territory, according to a similar approach to that of agricultural IG.

A specific sanction system is also envisaged to counter any abuse or imitation, to protect consumers and businesses operating in compliance with the rules. The expected effects include more effective counterfeiting protection and improved visibility on the markets of handicraft and industrial products typical of Made in Italy.
