Several users worldwide are reporting access and operation issues on Canva, the popular online graphic design platform. According to Down Detector’s findings, the difficulties began in today’s night, October 20, around 2:00, and within an hour the number of reports increased significantly. Users complain above all about the impossibility of saving or downloading their projects and slowness in uploading pages.
Canva’s difficulties are part of a wider context: in the same morning, many other sites and applications around the world stopped working properly or slowed down. These include Slack, Duolingo, Strava, Snapchat, British banking portals Lloyds Bank and Halifax, Roblox, Wordle and Pokémon GO video games, as well as numerous sites connected to Amazon, such as Epic Games Store and PlayStation online service.
The cause of disservices seems to be linked to a disruption of Amazon Web Services (AWS), the Amazon division that provides cloud infrastructure to thousands of companies. Canva, like many other platforms, uses AWS to manage connection with users and data storage. Amazon explained that one of its data centers in the United States had a technical failure, causing chain breaks for sites that lean on its servers.
After about an hour from the first reports, Amazon announced that its technicians identified the cause of the problem and that there were ongoing restoration interventions. Shortly after, the company reported that it observed “big signs of improvement”, but many users in different areas of the world continue to report difficulties of access and slowness.
Waiting for the service to return fully operational, who works with graphic design is looking for alternative solutions. Among the most mentioned are Gimp, a free and open source image editor compatible with different operating systems; PhotoPea, which replicates the Photoshop interface directly in the browser; Promeo, which offers access to a vast library of royalty-free content; and Lunacy, a free software that allows you to collaborate in real time with other users. We opted for Paint.
