Gaza, Tajani at the House: “Italy will be at the first meeting of the Board of Peace as an observer country”

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – “Gaza is crucial for our national security even in key to contrasting terrorism and irregular migration flows, but it is above all an open wound, a humanitarian tragedy that has shaken the consciences of all and that has seen Italy at the forefront, from the beginning, to save lives, alleviate the sufferings of civilians and silence the weapons.” The Foreign Minister, Antonio Tajani, said this in the course of communications to the House on the Board of Peace in Gaza.

“The Italian government has supported the peace plan: if someone today believes that there are alternatives, concrete, practicable to this plan would prove that they cannot deal with reality. Faced with a clear mandate from the United Nations, fueling uncertainty is equivalent to prolonging the sufferings of the Palestinian people,” he added.

“There have always been strong relations between Italy and the United States, regardless of who was leading the administration. Europe and the United States are two sides of the same coin that is the West, for this reason the absence of Italy a table in which we are discussing peace, security and stability in the Mediterranean, would not only, politically incomprehensible, but also contrary to the spirit of Article 11 of our Constitution, where it sanctions the repudiation of war as a means of settlement of disputes”, the Foreign Minister remarked. “The government considered it appropriate to attend, as an observer country, at the first meeting of the Board of Peace, scheduled Thursday in Washington. This is certainly a balanced and respectful solution to our constitutional constraints.” “The European Union has already confirmed the participation, with the Presidency of the round and with a representative of the Commission. All major partners in the region will also participate: Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Indonesia, the largest Muslim country in the world,” added Tajani. “How could Italy not be present where peace is discussed and built in the Middle East, in the presence of all the main regional actors,” he said.

“I am convinced that foreign policy issues should not be a ground of political confrontation, but of a serious, continuous and transparent dialogue and whenever it is possible to convergence by shared responsibility. The Gaza crisis imposes this level of awareness. We are talking about a crisis that affects the regional balances, the stability of the enlarged Mediterranean, the safety of the commercial routes of our export”, he added.

“The government has condemned any hypothesis of Israeli annexation of the West Bank, temptations that do not help penal builders and who risk jeopardizing the solution of two peoples and two states.”.
