From Sicily to Seoul, double international recognition for the Asp of Syracuse

SIRACUSA (ITALPRESS) – The innovation of the Syracuse ASP at the World Hospital Congress in Seoul with two results: the selection of ALICE for the Innovation Hub, among the 22 projects presented to the international hospital community, and the special mention awarded to CLARA as part of the IHF Awards 2026. The congress, organized by the International Hospital Federation together with the Korean Hospital Association, brings together managers and healthcare professionals from all over the world to confront the challenges of assistance, hospital management and innovation. The two results value the work of the SIFA team, directed by Santo Michele Pettignano, and the path of innovation promoted by the Syracuse Asp. Both projects arise within the Company from the collaboration between computer and clinical skills, with the aim of developing tools to support medical decisions and patient safety.
“These awards represent a reason for pride in the Asp of Syracuse and for Sicilian health – says the extraordinary commissioner Gioacchino Iraci – and enhance the skills of our professionals and the collaboration between technological and clinical fields. I address my appreciation to the director of Santo Michele Pettignano, to the whole SIFA team and to the health professionals involved. The value of innovation is measured in its ability to respond to people’s needs: it is with this responsibility that we intend to develop tools to support doctors, the safety of therapies and the quality of assistance”.
To present ALICE in Seoul was Giuseppe Pisasale, AI Solution Architect of the Asp of Syracuse, with an intervention dedicated to the project and method used for its development. With him the doctor Marco Distefano for the clinical component, expression of the integration between computer science and medicine that characterizes this experience. ALICE, an acronym for AI Laboratory for Infection Control and Epidemiology, is an artificial intelligence laboratory for infection control and epidemiology. It relates microbiological data, clinical information and treatments to support the doctor in therapeutic decisions and in contrast to infections and antimicrobial resistance.
CLARA, Clinical Lab Adverse Reaction Analyzer, is dedicated to pharmacological safety. Through the analysis of laboratory data and the information on the therapies, it supports the assessment of the risks associated with medicines, dosages and possible interactions. Both projects apply the ruled artificial intelligence method developed by the company: an approach that integrates clinical rules, algorithms and explicit controls to make support for traceable and verifiable decisions, keeping the doctor’s assessment central. The method is designed to be used with different models of artificial intelligence without requiring retraining and to facilitate the transfer to other healthcare realities. Participation in Seoul thus brings international attention to an experience born in Syracuse to address needs shared by hospitals: better use the available information, support early and informed decisions and contribute to the safety of care.
