From 1 to 8 November Rai and Airc still together for research

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – Rai and Airc are once again side by side for the cancer research fundraising. From Sunday 1 to Sunday 8 November the television and radio networks together with journalistic publications and digital platforms will be involved in the marathon that, for more than 30 years, contributes not only to collect money (163 million euros until today) but also to inform in the most correct way possible on a disease, cancer precisely, which until a few years ago could not even appoint. The fundraising counter will open on Sunday 1 November in “Domenica in” to close the next Sunday in a special “The inheritance”. Among the events involved are the two matches of the National Football Team against France and Belgium.

“We are proud to accompany Airc, fully performing our public service function,” said Rai Giampaolo Rossi at the press conference this morning, recalling that the common path began thanks to a intuition by Pippo Baudo who, in 1995, proposed his “Stories under the microscope”. Since then, he added Rossi, “Rai puts at his disposal all his creative potential with his talents that lend themselves with dedication and love for a cause that they believe fundamental: to tell research, illness, suffering and hope”.

The President of the Fondazione Airc Andrea Sironi confirms: “ Nine Italians out of ten know Airc and two thirds of these thanks to Rai. For decades cancer has been accompanied by fear and silence. In more than thirty years of collaboration, AIRC and Rai have contributed to discarding this taboo, bringing in the houses of the Italians rigorous and accessible scientific information. Today we talk about cancer with greater awareness and we recognize the value of prevention and research.”.

“Sixty years ago we didn’t even talk about cancer, today 50% of the cases heal and 40% are prevented through the work of the researchers – explains Anna Mondino, scientific director Airc – Initially it was thought that the origins of the tumors were only in our Dna but in these 30 years we realized that it is not only so: our metabolism, lifestyles, what we eat and breathe and our immune system are involved. We realized that it is a complex system and this for researchers becomes an interesting challenge because we have more targets and, therefore, more tools to interfere with the process of transformation of the DNA.”.

Today, Mondino adds, “therapies have improved, we understood how to combine historical therapies, such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy, with immunotherapy, molecular drugs and custom vaccines.” Then, of course, “there are more difficult diseases that still remain under the microscope and silent tumors such as those in the brain or pancreas that we must study because they are silent and therefore insidious.”.

In addition, to complicate things, there is also the lengthening of average life: “The number of cancer cases is intended to increase as well as the number of those who die because the population is ageing and, in ageing, some control mechanisms are less. But today we are able to chronicle some of these pathologies and it is likely that those suffering from certain types of tumors die for different causes. But, of course, it is a social problem that we must face.” In short, there is, unfortunately, still a lot. The number 45521 is active for donation.
