ROMA (ITALPRESS) – “The law proposal ‘Books to choose’, which is presented today, addresses a crucial issue. This is an important legislative initiative that aims to remove children and their mothers from the mafia environment of origin through an articulated set of measures to ensure their protection and new opportunities. Many young people are still involved and recruited by the mafia for illegal activities such as drug trafficking, extortion and armed intimidation. They are often children who come from difficult and disadvantaged contexts, forced to breathe from the early age a culture of illegality rooted above all in the home walls. Attracted by the illusion of gaining with ease power, prestige and economic gains, these young people end up becoming victims and executioners.” Thus the president of the House, Lorenzo Fontana, at the presentation of the bill “Books to choose”, in the Sala della Regina di Montecitorio.
“When the state manages to enter the lives of these boys before the mafia, it does not only do an act of justice, but returns them the opportunity to choose. It is therefore essential to encourage these adolescents to move away from the mafia families, offering them a concrete alternative to an intolerable condition of life and a perspective of a different future,” he added. “Every minor subtracted to mafia influence is a defeat for criminal organizations and a victory for the rule of law. Investing on these young people means discarding a system of overwhelming and distorted values. I therefore thank the Parliamentary Anti-Mafia Commission for the valuable contribution it has made and I hope that Parliament will proceed in a reasonable time to discuss this bill,” Fontana concluded.
