ROMA (ITALPRESS) – Emma Bonino died, former ministra, senatrice, deputata e attivista dei Radicali. She was 78.
A few days ago she was admitted to intensive care at the Holy Spirit Hospital in Rome. Then, she had been transferred to a private structure, based on what was agreed between the attending physician of the leader of More Europe, Claudio Santini, and the doctors of the Holy Spirit.
One of the most influential Italian policies, symbol of progressive activism and an ideal of inclusive society, whose battles continue to inspire the ideals of many. Born on 9 March 1948 in Bra, Piedmont, Emma Bonino began to actively engage in politics in university years. In the 1970s he joined the radical movement dedicated to the battles for civil rights, including the legalization of abortion, the decriminalization of drugs and against nuclear, alongside Marco Pannella.
On the international level, she committed herself to defending civil and political rights, for the abolition of the death penalty and against hunger in the world. In 1976, he was elected to Parliament for the first time as a representative of the Radical Party. During his political career, he held various positions, and was a Minister for European Policies and Minister for International Trade under the governments of Romano Prodi and Minister for Foreign Affairs with Enrico Letta.
He is also one of the first Italian women to play high-profile roles in international policy: he was a member of the European Parliament, from 1995 to 1999 he was a member of the European Commission as head of fisheries policy, consumer policy and the European Office for Humanitarian Aid and worked to promote European integration and international cooperation.
In his long career as an activist, he is the promoter of several international campaigns for ad hoc tribunals against war crimes in former Yugoslavia and Rwanda, for the establishment of the International Criminal Court, for the moratorium on death penalty, against hunger in the world, against female genital mutilation. He is among the founders of the NGOs “No Cain Touch” and “There is no Peace without Justice”.
More than once his name was circulated for the presidency of the Republic, especially in 2013 at the expiration of the mandate of Giorgio Napolitano, who was then re-elected. In 2014 he founded the +Europe party, which focused on European integration and individual freedoms.
In 2015, he revealed that he had lung cancer that forced him to undergo chemotherapy, but continued to work actively, without abandoning politics. Only last year he announced he was healed.
