PALERMO (ITALPRESS) – More accurate health checks, considering the possibility of a postponement of the beginning of the lessons in primary schools: this is the proposal of Matteo Bassetti, infectious and director of the department of Infectious Diseases at the Policlinico San Martino di Genova, regarding the story of the 4 year old girl dead for difterite in Palermo.
In a post on X Bassetti highlights how verification, dealing with a mandatory vaccination, should be done on a scale as wide as possible: “I believe that, in the light of the situation of vaccination shells in Sicily, it would be reasonable to assess a brief postponement of the beginning of the lessons, at least in primary schools, to allow health authorities to check on time the vaccination status of members and, where necessary, complete the recovery paths – writes the infectious -. It is not a ‘against’ position, but a matter of public health and prevention. The vaccination against diphtheria is mandatory in Italy and the Ministry of Health indicates the entry into primary school as an important moment for the call against diphtheria, tetanus, pertox and polio. For this reason it would be important to verify the actual administration of the vaccines provided, not limiting itself to aggregate data or self-certifications, and quickly activate the necessary recoveries.”.
Two passwords for Bassetti: prevention and safety. “In 2026, in a country with an advanced health system, even a single new case of diphtheria should be considered an event to be prevented with maximum determination, not something to resign. Before reopening the classrooms, you should do everything you can to make them safe,” he concludes.
