Delta Air Lines has cancelled direct flights from its program between John F. Kennedy Airport in New York and Houston, Memphis and St. Louis. The three routes were stopped from June 7 and should have resumed early September. Their return was first postponed and then completely eliminated from the company’s hours.
The modification appeared in the reservation systems on July 25, according to Cirium Diio data reported by AirlineGeeks. Delta then confirmed the decision, explaining only that it is part of the “normal network planning”. The company said it will directly contact the passengers involved to propose alternative solutions.
The deleted links join JFK at the George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, Memphis International Airport and St. Louis Lambert International Airport. They were all quite recent: Delta had started them on September 8, 2025, less than a year ago, with a flight per day to each destination.
For Memphis and St. Louis, the main argument used at the time of launch was the possibility to reach the great international hub of JFK without passing from Atlanta or another port of call. The flight from Memphis, operated with an Embraer 175 from 76 places, arrived in New York in the evening, in time for several departures to Europe. Tennessee airport had presented the route just like a way to expand international connections.
In St. Louis, however, Delta returned to JFK for the first time since 2015; even in that case the airport had insisted on access to the global network of the company.
The suspension decided in the spring had arrived during a strong increase in the fuel price for aircraft, which had driven several U.S. companies to reduce less profitable flights and increase some additional charges. In April Delta had estimated that the fuel was going to add approximately $2 billion to the costs of the second quarter, while the average price of jet fuel had risen from 85-90 to about $209 per barrel, according to Reuters.
This explains the context in which the three connections were stopped in June, but Delta did not explicitly attribute their final cancellation to fuel. The formula on the “network planning” does not clarify whether they weighed the demand, the profitability of the individual routes or the choice to employ elsewhere planes and hourly bands of JFK. Connecting the July decision directly to the only increase in costs would therefore be an interpretation, not a motivation provided by the company.
Delta will continue flying unstoppable from New York to all three cities. The departures will be concentrated in LaGuardia, where the company currently operates four flights per day to Houston, three to Memphis and four to St. Louis. For those who start or finish the trip in the New York area, the main consequence is the change of airport: ticket and company can remain the same, while re-checked ground transport, parking and arrival time at the terminal.
The problem is more relevant for those who used the three flights as a link to an international destination. LaGuardia and JFK are both located in Queens, but they are two separate airports and the transfer requires to move on the ground. An itinerary that previously provided a single coincidence to JFK could then be rescheduled through another Delta hub or request a different solution.
The choice also makes the division between the two New York airports of the company more clear. Delta describes LaGuardia as the center of its national network and JFK as the main starting point for international connections and for some internal routes to higher demand. Overall it offers up to 465 departures per day from the two airports to more than 120 destinations. The cancellation therefore concerns three connections from JFK, not the presence of Delta in the three markets.
Those who had a reservation after summer should check the route in the Fly Delta app or in the “My Trips” section of the site. The company normally tries to automatically reproduce passengers on another flight. If the new solution is not acceptable, the rules published by Delta allow you to search for an alternative or to renounce the journey and get the refund of the unused part of the ticket and some services already paid. The US Department of Transport also provides a refund when a company cancels a flight and the passenger refuses alternative transport.
