Crosetto “Nuclear serves national security, no military programs”

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – “Energy security is part of the responsibility of Defense, and the availability of energy also depends on the continuity of the essential functions of the state”. Guido Crosetto, in an interview with Il Foglio, said that “energy security cannot be independent of the atom”, without “renewable work” but balancing “efficiency, sustainability and operational continuity”.

With regard to the international framework, Crosetto emphasizes the separation between civil and military sectors: “The production of energy and nuclear weapons have different purposes and are governed by distinct frameworks.” Italy operates in the hive of the Non-Proliferation Treaty, which is why the regulatory path “regards energy, research, plant safety and material management”, and “not a nuclear military program”.

Finally, the minister rejects propaganda approaches on public opinion doubts: “‘New generation’ cannot become a formula that exempts from responding to safety, time, cost, fuel.” Relevating from the polls “opening signs towards nuclear, with an interesting sensibility among the younger ones”, Crosetto concludes that the task of institutions is “make the picture understandable and do not ask for adherence on the basis of a slogan”.
