ROMA (ITALPRESS) – Today the press conference “Carpediem: technology and ethics of research for newborn children”, organized by the IRIV at the Chamber of Deputies, which has put in the center the story of Italian excellence in the care of newborns thanks to CARPEDIEM, a neonatal dialysis machine created by Professor Claudio Ronco.
The event, promoted by congressman Silvio Giovine and moderated by Gian Antonio Stella, underlined that this innovation, born from the independent commitment of the IRCV, has filled a global therapeutic vacuum, offering for over a decade a concrete life expectancy to thousands of newborns with serious cardiorenal pathologies, and affirming the value of ethical scientific research and service of life allowing to reduce by more than 50% the mortality of newborns suffering from serious cardio impairments. CARPEDIEM (Cardio Renal Pediatric Dialysis Emergency Machine), a miniaturized machine designed in 2010 for the neonatal dialysis by Claudio Ronco, “represents a history of Italian excellence internationally recognized. IRRIV has always welcomed young researchers from all over the world, with the aim of continuing to grow as an active and productive centre in the future of research and development,” reads in a note.
The apostolic blessing of Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Secretary of State of the Vatican, recalled the importance of deepening the most delicate and promising frontiers of modern medicine, hoping that “scientific research, as a high form of charity, is always placed at the service of life in the awareness that every newborn, especially if fragile or sick, is never a number or a statistical data but a person with an infinite dignity”.
Silvio Giovine, promoter of the press conference, underlined the fundamental contribution that IRRIV has offered and continues to offer to global scientific research, making Vicenza a “strategic pole of international relevance for scientific research, thanks to the work of Professor Ronco and the more than 250 doctors and researchers who have marked the history of the Institute. The history of Carpediem teaches us that, when we have the common goal of saving lives, our health professionals do not know limits and are able to realize inventions that, today, save thousands of lives all over the world and give hope to their families.”.
For Professor Claudio Ronco, Director of IRRIV, the invention of CARPEDIEM “has given a new hope to newborns and mothers all over the world. This is thanks to the invention of a miniaturized device for dialysis for children with severe kidney dysfunction. An all-Italian project born and developed at the IRCV of Vicenza and voluntarily not patented”, recalling the principle on which the Institute is founded: “ethics before profit. Science in front of everything else.”.
MEP Elena Donazzan, in conclusion, argued that there is a health diplomacy “which concerns Prof. Ronco. Health diplomacy today could be the most powerful among diplomats. Health diplomacy puts in front of a pain and in the face of pain it stops. Through the young people who have passed from IRCV, I hope that this can be an element of social innovation in relationships. Vicenza is international, IRRIV is international and Professor Ronco is a great ambassador of these realities.”.
