Born, Meloni “We respect commitments, but we establish ways and priorities”. And Ukraine: “Italy confirms convinced support” / Video

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – “We want to respect commitments, we will do it and we are already doing it, but we also want to do it in a sustainable way, that is by establishing us the times, ways and priorities according to context and our possibilities.” Thus the President of the Council, Giorgia Meloni, at the press conference at the end of the NATO summit in Ankara.

“To Ankara Italy sits at the high-headed table and with only one compass: the defense of national interest,” he added.

“The summit is an opportunity to confront colleagues on the work done here, on how much and how to make the Atlantic Alliance even stronger, firmer and more capable of responding to the complex challenges of our time. I believe this is the most important message of the Ankara summit: NATO is a united alliance, aware of the challenges facing and determined to strengthen itself,” Meloni continued.

“We are convinced that it is absolutely necessary to do so in a time like this. It is time for Europe to secure its own security, not to do a favor to someone, but not to depend on anyone. It is therefore a matter of sovereignty, even before it is defended,” the Premier noted.

“We remembered that the Italian contribution to the Alliance goes beyond the important accounting exercise and makes Italy a security provider and a credible ally. The nearly 3,000 military personnel in the main theatres of the Alliance demonstrate this. We are the NATO nation that offers the largest number of women and men on the missions in which NATO is committed, in absolute terms,” Meloni concluded.

Italy confirms its “convinced support for Ukraine, also witnessed by the bilateral meeting with President Volodomyr Zelensky,” he said.

“I don’t regret anything I did. I made a political investment, by conviction, about the unity of the West and I claimed it 360 degrees. It’s not a strategy I’ve put on the pitch with Donald Trump’s arrival. There are affinities with Trump on some themes. I thought it might be easier, but things are going as we saw. But I don’t change my mind about what Italian interest is,” he said.

“Confronted with Trump very positive, I say it now at the tip of feet, but the climate has been constructive, positive and unity.” Concerning a possible distrust of American troops in Italy, he added: “At present we have not been informed of any formal commitment, but it is a hypothesis that should not be taken care of by us. The United States discusses many presidents of a possible distrust in Europe to focus on other fronts. I consider this an opportunity for Europe to achieve greater autonomy,” he said.

With the leaders “I shared a reflection that I consider decisive for the future of the alliance. I think the point is not just how much we invest in defense and security. I think the point is also what we invest in when we invest in defense and security. I think war in Ukraine has also shown how modern war is changing. If we increase the resources we invest – he continued – without giving us the political problem of how we guarantee our control of the fundamental branches of defence we risk paying to finance our dependence. Of the 12 critical raw materials identified by NATO, at least 6 are controlled by a single country. I think that upstream also serves, after we have decided that we all spend more, understand what we spend and how we securely put the fact that we are spending resources for something that we fully control and on which we know to be sovereigns,” he concluded.
