ROMA (ITALPRESS) – “What happened is unacceptable and we expect to check the responsibilities. That said, I repeat that the safety of care is a constant commitment to all levels, i.e. ministry, regions, health and hospital companies, to ensure that every patient always receives the best assistance with the minimum risk of health damage.” Speaking, in an interview with Repubblica, he is the Minister of Health Orazio Schillaci, about the case of the two-year-old admitted to Naples to which a seriously damaged heart was transplanted. “I have given the opportunity to send inspectors – he adds – because patient safety controls are one of the primary tasks of the ministry. We are faced with a particularly serious case and we also do our part to verify what happened”. The Ministry “is already exercising its own powers. I remember that the picking, conservation, transport and organ transplantation activities are governed by extremely stringent procedures and constantly updating. The last revision was formalized with an agreement in the State-Regions Conference last July. We must ensure that the protocols have been respected or if there has been some lack in one or more phases of the donation and transplant in question.”.
Schillaci emphasizes that this is “a complex and delicate situation, which requires accuracy. It will take the necessary time. Our audits proceed together with the National transplant Centre and in the coming days the inspectors will be in the two structures of Bolzano and Naples”. “Unfortunately – he adds – zero risk does not exist, in any area of medicine. The transplants almost seem to have become routine surgery because, fortunately, they carry out a higher number than the past, but they involve procedures with very high complexity, in which, despite the high competence guaranteed by the professionals of our centers, the risk of failure is to be considered”.
