The Ambassador of Italy in the United States, Marco Peronaci, and the President of the Committee for the celebrations of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the American Declaration of Independence, Rosie Rios, signed yesterday at Villa Firenze a Memorandum of Understanding between our Embassy in Washington and the America250 Committee, to formalize the cooperation between Italy and the United States on joint initiatives linked to the 250 years of American independence.
“Italy wants to celebrate the important anniversary of 2026 and the friendship that binds us to the United States by participating in the festivities of next year with an “Italian programme”: a series of events and proposals that highlight the contribution our country and the Italian-American community have given to the construction of the identity of the United States, from the history of emigration to contributions in cultural, scientific and social fields,” said the Ambassador.
As announced by the Ambassador, the Italian program for America250 previews the first appointments already in January 2026, with an event dedicated to the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Memorandum Italy-United States for the protection of cultural goods, whose renewal is signed in Rome by the Minister of Culture Giuli and the Deputy Secretary of State Rogers on 5 December.
There will be initiatives and events in the musical field – with the involvement of Maestro Gianandrea Noseda, Musical Director of the National Symphony Orchestra (NSO) in Washington – and in the cinema, up to the science, passing from insights dedicated to central figures in the path towards American independence like that of Filippo Mazzei. Momento clou will be an exhibition of Roman statues dedicated to the Emperor Trajan and the persistent impact of Roman civilization on the contemporary world. These initiatives will be implemented in collaboration with some partners, including the National Italian American Foundation (NIAF).
After the signing ceremony of the agreement, a multi-voice conversation was followed on the relationship between the two countries, animated by Anita McBride, Vice President of the Board of NIAF and member of the White House Historical Association, Barbara Faedda, Director of the Italian Academy at Columbia University, and Lisa Sasaki, Undersecretary for Special Projects at the Smithsonian Institute. A debate that, starting from a historical perspective, offered a current look on what continues to make the friendship between Italy and the United States unique.
Among the guests present, the Assistant Secretary for Cultural Affairs Darren Beattie, President of NIAF Robert Allegrini, Chairman of NIAF John Calvelli, Director of the National Symphony Orchestra Jean Davidson and member of the Board of the Kennedy Center Paolo Zampolli.
