Ambassador Giorgio Marrapodi next Permanent Representative of Italy to the UN

Ambassador Giorgio Marrapodi, currently Ambassador of Italy to Turkey, will soon assume the functions of Permanent Representative of Italy at the United Nations in New York, replacing the current Permanent Representative Maurizio Massari, who will leave its headquarters on 31 December 2025.

Ambassador Marrapodi has a long diplomatic experience, acquired in 35 years of career, and has served, among other things, at the Italian Diplomatic Representation in the United States, in New York from 1994 to 1998, during the mission to one of our greatest and prestigious Italian ambassadors, what was Paolo Fulci.

It was one of the historical periods of Italian diplomacy, when Italy left an indelible trace within the United Nations with the presence of illustrious diplomats who accompanied the action of the Chief Mission Ambassador Paolo Fulci, such as his right arm the Ambassador Giulio Terzi of Sant’Agata, Deputy Chief Mission of the Representation and Giorgio Marrapodi, who represented Italy to the Ecumenical Committee.

Ambassador Paolo Fulci, together with his collaborators, also took care of the state visit of the President of the Republic Oscar Luigi Scalfaro in the United States of America, for the part concerning the participation of the Head of State in the various meetings held within the United Nations Security Council and the speech delivered by President Scalfaro at the United Nations Assembly on 3 April 1996.

Ambassador Giorgio Marrapodi recalled his diplomatic mission in New York, with the crucial role played by the Permanent Representative of Italy Paolo Fulci in that place, and the contribution of our country to the efforts of the reform of the World Organization in the 1990s, in the collective publication “Italy at the UN 1993-1999”, published by Rubettino curated by Raniero Tallarigo.

Since January 2018, Marrapodi has served as Director-General for Development Cooperation in the Farnesina and during 2020/2021 he has been a member of the UNSG Food Systems Advisory Committee.

From 2013 to 2017 he was Ambassador of Italy in Austria and during his diplomatic mission in Vienna he was the promoter of 4 publications on the residence of the Italian Ambassador in Vienna, the renowned and splendid Palazzo Metternich, property of the former Prince Klemens Wenzel Lothar von Metternich.

The first publication was printed on the occasion of the bicentenary of the Congress of Vienna 1815-2015 and the second on the occasion of the 170° anniversary of the building of the Palace, both in Italian and German version. The four precious volumes, edited by Ambassador Gaetano Cortese, have been published in the splendid Necklace of the Editor Carlo Colombo of Rome, of which Cortese 25 years ago was the creator and founder, where are documented the artistic and architectural wonders of the Italian diplomatic representations in the world and the history of diplomatic relations between Italy and the various countries treated in volumes.
