A man was killed in a 7-Eleven near Times Square

On Thursday, February 12, just before 10:30 in the morning, a man was killed at gunshots inside a 7-Eleven store at the corner of West 39th Street, in the heart of Midtown Manhattan, a few dozen meters from the Port Authority Bus Terminal and a short distance from Broadway theatres. The victim, a forty-year-old man, was shot at the neck and the New York City Fire Department rescuers found him in critical condition when the police arrived. His body was then transported directly from the medical officer’s office team a few hours later.

According to investigative sources and witnesses, the murder would have happened at the end of a diverb between the victim and another man inside the store. Some witnesses report that the victim, described as panhandler (academy), was known in the area to keep the 7-Eleven door open in exchange for alms; on Thursday morning he would ask for money to the other man as he entered, and the situation would be degenerated until the shooting. The police indicated that the action lasted a few seconds and that the suspect pulled a firearm and fired a single shot before fleeing.

The attacker managed to leave the scene on foot in the south, along Eighth Avenue. According to descriptions collected by law enforcement, he wore a green jacket, dark pants, a mask and brought a black backpack. New York Police (NYPD) has released some surveillance images extracted from the store’s internal footage and other security cameras in the area to identify and arrest him, but no crashes on Thursday.

The episode had an immediate impact on commuters, workers and tourists in the area early in the morning: witnesses described screams and panic, with some commercial activities that remained in lockdown for several hours while the police isolated the scene. The neighborhood, although densely frequented, had not been the scene of recent shootings: in the latest available police data there are no similar episodes within the Midtown South Police Precinct between January 1 and February 8.

At the moment the profile of the victim remains to be clarified from the anagraphic and social point of view: friends and people who attend the area claim that it was a man without fixed abode, linked to the daily routine of the street corner. The authorities have not yet issued official details on its identity or any precise reasons for the basis of the dispute degenerated into murder. The investigation is active and is coordinated by the New York Police Department with the Manhattan District Attorney’s office.
