Mattarella “Free navigation compromised, there are those who disapply shared rules”

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – “The reflections of the geo-economic and geo-political crises in place heavily affect the freedom of navigation, while this, for its universal character, needs and lives of rules”. The President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, said this in his speech at the Confitarma Assembly in Rome.

“If we think that well before the International Maritime Organization of 1948, the discipline of free navigation of the Suez Canal finds origin in the Convention of Constantinople of 1888, we could deduce that, at the present international moment, there are those who disapply shared rules to impose their own, with proprietary attitudes, proposing to bring back the history of civilization and that we are called to the duty to vanify these impulses – added the head of the State -. Crisis multiply: the Black Sea, the Red Sea, piracy in the Horn of Africa and the Gulf of Guinea, to name a few. Our Navy continues with a leading role on this front. Unconventional protagonists are added to the statues. In citing some of these snodes, there appears the diversity of approach they are faced with. A broad international cooperation tackles the issue of piracy, starting from the useful Eunavfor Aspides (scudo) mission of the European Union. The European Union is particularly committed to the issue of the guarantee of freedom of navigation, as evidenced by the recent call, to which more than 60 countries have joined – said Mattarella –. The maritime world is an expression of the contrast to every closure that attacks freedom in navigation and exchanges. He is a friend of rules that introduce equity in relationships and approach the worlds, so he is a carrier of peace. The disorder introduced is affecting the shipping and, from this, the daily life of our communities in every area. It is easy to assume that health of the navigation and wellness industry is closely linked.”.

“Among the goods of the merchant fleet, rescue operations can not be forgotten – especially in the Mediterranean – in relation to Guard Costiera and Capitanerie, to which often the ships are facing, and in which the founding values of the national marinery emerge: responsibility, security, protection of human life at sea”, the president continued.
