After the meetings in Georgia, the Liguria Region aims to follow the contacts started on the harbour system and on the transports. The passages discussed include a memorandum of understanding with the government of the American State and the possibility of an air link between Liguria and Georgia, addressed with Delta along with representatives of the airport of Genoa. In the interview with the New Yorker, the head of Cabinet of the Region, Maximilian Nannini, retraces the visit and explains what developments are expected.
“These days the meetings in Georgia were very interesting. We left with a small trip from Atlanta to Savannah, where we visited the port of Savannah, which is one of the most important ports of the United States”, says Nannini. The visit to the port was the first stage of a confrontation that then involved the government of Georgia in Atlanta.
“From Savannah we returned to Atlanta. Here we had some very important meetings with the Government of Georgia, aimed at carrying out a program that will arrive at the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding, linked to the activities that we can do in common, strengthening the relations between the State of Georgia and the Liguria Region”. The memorandum is the document with which the two administrations intend to define the areas of collaboration: in the words of Nannini, the signature is one of the next steps of the path initiated during the mission.
Another meeting concerned air connections. «In the afternoon I personally attended a very interesting meeting with Delta, whose headquarters are here in Atlanta, along with the representatives of the airport of Genoa, to try to understand if there are possibilities of opening a new line that connects, with Delta, Liguria with the State of Georgia». It is therefore a comparison of the feasibility of a new course, of which the interview does not announce the opening.
To continue the contacts, the Region proposed a visit in Italy in 2027. “We invited a delegation from Georgia to visit us next year in Liguria, so as to consolidate this relationship. But beyond the duties, we have actually seen that there is a real will to collaborate: there are all the signs, the indicators that tell us this”.
The field on which Nannini insists is the harbour one, along with the necessary links to move the goods. “The port represents the main element on which to develop all the activities, and then the logistics, therefore the logistics to 360 degrees”.
Its mission budget is positive, although the expected results will depend on the follow-up of meetings. “This mission marks a historic moment for our region. Georgia is a state of great expansion: we have intercepted this enormous potential and we are convinced that this will bring us great results. As we are convinced that Georgia has understood that Liguria, while being a small Italian region, has enormous potential, especially linked to the port and to the whole infrastructural network that connects it”.
