ROMA (ITALPRESS) – “In these days the schools have reopened the gates: questions that concern everyone, not only those who teach or study. The educational question is not a theme among others, nor is it reduced to programs and methodologies. Touch the heart of our cohabitation. To educate means to accompany a person to become free, able to seek truth, to recognize good, to enter into relationship with others and to assume responsibly their place in the world”. This is said by the President of the Council, Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, in his introduction to the work of the Permanent Episcopal Council.
“The recent episodes of violence ask us deeply and must push us to a renewed presence in the educational world. In the Magnifica Humanitas, Leo XIV points out no longer deferable challenges. The first is that of educational inequalities – continues -. We cannot accept that the birthplace, the economic, physical condition or the social context determine the learning opportunities of a boy. An authentically inclusive school is one of the most powerful tools of justice and peace. The second is pedagogical and also concerns technological change. Artificial intelligence can offer valuable resources, but it does not replace educational work.”.
“The school does not compete with machines in providing quick answers, but teaches to ask questions that make life human. No algorithm can take the place of the gaze of a teacher who encourages, corrects, understands and accompanies. At this glance (teachers) is a great recognition. The third challenge is perhaps the deepest: to guard the ability to think – emphasizes Zuppi -. In a world full of stimuli, information and connections, it serves places where to learn to stop, to deepen, to distinguish the true from false, the essential from the superficial. Young people need adults who witness that true knowledge is not accumulation of data, but wisdom for life. At the beginning of the school year we do not wish only good results. We wish our schools to be communities capable of generating trust, passion and responsibility; places where no one feels excluded; laboratories of humanity where technology is at the service of the person and not the person at the service of technology. We wish them to preserve the slow time of listening, study, wonder, true confrontation, without which no inner freedom can grow. The school is not a space to cross quickly: it is still today a decisive construction site of our common future”.
