At the Bio-Medic Campus in Rome, radiotherapy with AI that adapts cancer treatment

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – Real-time adaptation of treatment to patient conditions and tumor evolution, directly during the radiotherapy session, thanks to artificial intelligence. It is the main innovation that characterizes the new Adaptive Linac Ethos of the Fondazione Policlinico Universitario Campus Bio-Medico, inaugurated today on the occasion of the World Radiotherapy Day. The Polyclinic is among the first health facilities in Italy and the first hospital in Rome and Lazio to put into operation this latest linear accelerator. Active at the Complex Operating Unit of Oncological Radiotherapy directed by Professor Sara Ramella, the new machinery becomes part of the welfare activity provided in agreement with the National Health Service and is now available to all patients followed by the structure and citizens of the Roman territory, Lazio and Central Italy.

The inauguration took place in the course of the event entitled “Radiotherapy Adaptative: the technology of new generation to the service of the patient”, which saw the participation of the President of the Fondazione Policlinico Universitario Campus Bio-Medico Carlo Tosti and the CEO and General Manager Paolo Sormani, the Prefect of Rome Lamberto Giannini and the President of the Municipality IX of Rome Capital Titti Di Salvo. The initiative ended with the blessing of Fr Massimo Angelelli, Director of the National Office for the Pastoral Care of Health of the Italian Episcopal Conference. Unlike traditional radiotherapy, based on a plan defined at the beginning of the course and then replicated for all sessions, the new Adaptive Linac Ethos uses advanced imaging and artificial intelligence technologies to recalibrate treatment according to anatomical conditions detected at the time of irradiation. A real-time approach that allows you to strike the tumor more accurately, to preserve as much as possible the surrounding healthy organs and to reduce the side effects associated with care. Cancer continues to be one of the main challenges for healthcare systems worldwide.

In Italy, according to the estimates of the Italian Association of Medical Oncology (AIOM), in 2025 approximately 390.000 new cases of cancer were recorded. In this scenario, radiotherapy plays a central role: more than 60% of cancer patients need this kind of treatment during the therapeutic path, according to the latest Report on the welfare condition of cancer patients promoted by the Italian Federation of Volunteering Associations in Oncology (FAVO). Radiotherapy also contributes to 42% of total healing, as highlighted by the Italian Association of Radiotherapy and Clinical Oncology (AIRO). Radiotherapeutic treatment can be used for all types of tumors, with a particularly significant impact in locations most subject to change over time, such as lung, head-neck district and addomino-pelvica region. The Complex Operating Unit of Oncological Radiotherapy of the Bio-Medic Campus operates in agreement with the National Health Service at the headquarters of Trigoria and the Longoni Bio-Medico Campus – Medical Center, in the prenestine district, through a multidisciplinary approach that integrates specialist skills, advanced technologies and attention to the needs of the person. In 2025, among the two offices, almost 7,000 patients were assisted, with over 149,000 performances. In the first six months of 2026 the number of patients has touched 5,000, while the 72,000 performance has been exceeded.
