ROMA (ITALPRESS) – The notice with which the Government is communicating to the EU the extension, for another 15 days, of border controls areas and maritime with Spain. The Viminale notes that “the decision was taken, in line with the analysis carried out by the Committee on Immigration and Security of the frontiers, because of the permanence of the evaluation elements that had been the basis of their reintroduction on 1 August, but at the same time also taking into account the initiatives already initiated by Spain, together with the European Union, so that in that area the situation can start to a near normalization”.
The evaluations on the basis of the extension were communicated by the Minister of the Interior, Matteo Piantedosi, to his Spanish counterpart, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, during a constructive telephone comparison.

“The 15-day extension of the Schengen Treaty with Spain was necessary.” The Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi said this in the margin of the commemoration ceremony of Giovanbattista Cutolo, a 24-year-old musician killed on 31 August 2023 in Piazza Municipio in Naples.
“It is a decision – Piantedosi continued – motivated by the fact that there is an analysis made by specialists who gather in the border security analysis committee. We have limited it to 15 days because, if on the one hand the analysis made by specialists indicates that they remain motivations for which this measure was made, on the other hand it is appreciable the effort that the Spanish government is making with the EU to create the right overcoming of the situation that has been created. We trust both the last, – he added – we are also available in every form of collaboration with Spain, with the EU. Therefore, a decision which, for other, is based on the measure, as you have seen, has not been particularly invasive” and “has allowed the normality of transits between European citizens. So, we’re gonna move on like this. We trust both the last extension because it would mean that, as we imagine, we will go towards a normalization of the situation.”.
