ROMA (ITALPRESS) – From the beginning of the year to August 5 141 confirmed cases of West Nile virus infection in man have been reported in Italy, of which 64 have manifested themselves in the neuro-invasive form (1 case imported from the Maldives), 27 asymptomatic cases identified in blood donors, 50 cases of fever (1 case imported from Burkina Faso). 6 deaths were notified between confirmed cases (1 death in an imported case). This is the second surveillance bulletin coordinated by the Iss. Last year in the same period were 173 cases reported with 11 deaths.
Save to 50 the provinces with demonstrated circulation of the virus belonging to 16 Regions: Piedmont, Lombardy, Veneto, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Liguria, Emilia-Romagna, Tuscany, Umbria, Lazio, Abruzzo, Molise, Campania, Puglia, Calabria, Sicily and Sardinia. During the same period 3 cases of Usutu virus were reported, all in Lombardy.
From 1 January to 31 July 2026 the national surveillance system of arbovirosis coordinated by the ISS is 192 cases confirmed by Dengue (all associated with travel abroad, of which 125 with probable place of exposure the Maldives, no death); 17 confirmed cases of Chikungunya (all associated with travel abroad, no death); 3 cases of Zika virus (all associated with travel abroad, no death).
